Presbyopia Eye Drops in Alpharetta: VIZZ vs. Vuity

Holding your phone farther away to read it? Prescription eye drops can sharpen up-close vision for part of the day. At Reimbold Eye Group in Alpharetta, we help you compare the newer drop, VIZZ, with the older drop, Vuity, and you can try a drop in our office before you decide.

What is presbyopia?

Inside your eye is a lens that changes shape to focus up close. After about age 40, that lens gets stiffer. It can't focus up close as well, so menus, phones and labels start to blur. This is called presbyopia. It happens to everyone, and it keeps changing slowly into your 60s.

Arms too short? You hold things farther away to read them.

More light, please. Small print is harder in dim rooms.

Tired eyes after reading or phone time.

Readers on, readers off, all day long.

How presbyopia eye drops work

The drops make your pupil, the black circle in the middle of your eye, smaller. A small pupil works like a pinhole. It lets more things look in focus at once, so near vision gets clearer.

The effect lasts for several hours, then wears off. The drops do not fix the lens inside your eye, and they do not stop presbyopia from changing. They are prescription only.

The newer drop: VIZZ vs. Vuity

Vuity was the first presbyopia eye drop, approved by the FDA in 2021. The newer drop is VIZZ (aceclidine). The FDA approved it in July 2025, and it reached pharmacies in fall 2025. Here is how they compare, based on each drop's FDA label and studies.

How long it lasts. VIZZ is used once a day and lasted up to about 10 hours in its studies. Vuity lasts about 6 hours from one drop, and a second dose later in the day is approved.

How it works. VIZZ works mostly on the pupil, with little pull on the focusing muscle. Vuity also tightens the focusing muscle. That can shift vision a little toward nearsighted and may add brow ache.

Side effects. With VIZZ, the most common were stinging, dim vision and headache. With Vuity, the most common were headache and red eyes.

Side by side? No study has tested VIZZ and Vuity against each other. Their studies used different tests, so the numbers can't be compared directly.

So, is VIZZ better than Vuity? In our experience, VIZZ seems to cause fewer headaches and brow aches than Vuity. That is likely because of how it works: it acts mainly on the pupil and pulls less on the focusing muscle. It may also last longer. But no head-to-head study has compared the two, results vary, and dim vision is common with VIZZ. Talk with your eye doctor about which drop fits your eyes.

Two other drops are also approved: Qlosi, a lower-strength pilocarpine drop, and Yuvezzi, a two-ingredient drop approved in January 2026. We can talk through those too.

Who may do well with drops

You are in your mid-40s to 60s and need help with some near tasks, not all-day reading.

You want a break from readers for a few hours, like dinner out, shopping or a quick look at your phone.

You read mostly in good light. Drops work best when the room is bright.

Talk with us first if you drive a lot at night, have had a retinal tear or detachment, or have had inflammation inside the eye (iritis).

Honest limits and side effects

In our experience, many patients try presbyopia drops and then decide not to keep using them. Some find the effect too small, some don't like that it wears off, and some don't like the side effects. Drops are still a real option, and some people love them. We just want you to know what to expect.

Results vary from person to person. No drop works for everyone.

Many people still prefer contacts or glasses

Drops are one choice, not the only one. Many of our patients still like multifocal contact lenses or progressive glasses better, because they work all day, in any light. Some people use both: contacts or glasses most days, and drops for a night out.

See every choice on our presbyopia options page.

Presbyopia eye drop questions

What is the new eye drop for reading vision?

The newest one people are asking about is VIZZ (aceclidine 1.44%). The FDA approved it in July 2025, and it reached pharmacies in fall 2025. The older drop most people know is Vuity (pilocarpine 1.25%), approved in 2021.

Is VIZZ better than Vuity?

It may be a better fit for some people. In its studies, VIZZ lasted up to about 10 hours from one daily dose, and it works mostly on the pupil, with less pull on the eye's focusing muscle. But no study has tested VIZZ and Vuity side by side, so we can't say one is better for everyone. Talk with your eye doctor about which one fits your eyes and your day.

Will presbyopia drops give me a headache?

They can. Headache is one of the most common side effects of both drops. In our experience, people in their early 40s are the most likely to get headaches or a brow ache. For many people it is mild and fades, but for some it is the reason they stop. In our experience, the newer drop, VIZZ, seems easier on headaches and brow ache than Vuity, likely because it pulls less on the focusing muscle. That is not a promise, and no study has compared the two side by side.

Can I drive at night after using the drops?

Be careful. The drops make your pupil small, so things can look dim or dark, especially at night or in low light. Do not drive if your vision is not clear. We usually suggest putting the drop in in the morning, so by the time you drive at night, the dimming has mostly worn off. Talk with your eye doctor about your own plan.

Will I still need reading glasses?

Maybe some of the time. Drops help with everyday near tasks in good light. Many people still use readers for tiny print, dim rooms or long reading.

Can I use the drops with contact lenses?

Often, yes. For VIZZ, take your lenses out before the drops and wait 10 minutes before you put them back in. Ask us how to use your drop with your contacts.

How much does it cost to try the drops?

Trying a drop in our office costs $99. That includes one follow-up visit at about one month to check your retina. It is an add-on fee: you still pay for your regular eye exam as usual, through your insurance or our standard exam fee.
