Eye Exams in Alpharetta, GA
Reimbold Eye Group is an optometry practice and luxury optical at 4180 Old Milton Pkwy, Suite 1-D, in Alpharetta. We do comprehensive eye exams for adults and kids, and we see families from Alpharetta, Milton, Johns Creek, Roswell and Cumming. At our office an eye exam is more than "Do you like one or two?" We check how well you see, and we also look closely at the health of your eyes and explain what we find.
From the moment you walk in
Our team connects with every patient, starting the moment you open our door. Our goal is for you to feel comfortable with your health care and well informed about it, and we use education and visuals to explain what we find.
What happens during your eye exam
Every exam is done by one of our optometrists, with help from a trained technician. A typical visit includes:
- Your history and concerns. We ask about your vision, your health, your medications and what you need your eyes to do at work, at school and on screens.
- Digital refraction. An autorefractor and a digital phoropter let us measure your prescription in fine detail, so there is less guessing between "one or two."
- Retinal photos (fundus photography). Photos of the retina at the back of the eye help us look for eye disease and for signs of conditions elsewhere in the body, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. We show you the pictures and explain them.
- Corneal topography. A map of the front surface of the eye. We scan every patient because keratoconus can now be treated, and finding it early can save vision.
- Eye pressure and eye health checks. We check eye pressure and examine the front and back of the eye. Every patient gets three tests at every exam: corneal topography, fundus (retina) photography and an OCT scan of the optic nerve. When needed, we add a Humphrey visual field test of your side vision or front-of-eye photos to document what we see. We usually dilate your eyes every 2 to 3 years, and yearly or sooner when an eye condition needs it.
- Color vision, depth perception and eye teaming. Our ocular analyzer helps us find lazy eye and eye-teaming problems that cause double vision or eye strain.
About the $39 imaging fee: Every exam includes both fundus photography and corneal topography. These carry an annual $39 co-pay that insurance does not pay. Most insurance plans charge a $39 co-pay for just one scan; we include both scans for the same amount.
What makes a Reimbold exam different
Every exam includes corneal topography, fundus (retina) photography and an OCT scan of the optic nerve. Here is what else sets our exams apart:
-
Eye pressure for every patient. We check every patient's eye pressure.
-
We go through every image with you. Your doctor walks you through each image so you understand your findings. We also show you example images of eyes with glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and macular degeneration, so you can see for yourself that your eyes don't have them.
-
Advanced testing for glaucoma and the retina. Along with OCT, we have OCT angiography (OCTA). Most optometrists don't own an OCTA. It can catch early changes from macular degeneration, diabetes and other blood-vessel problems.
-
Screening for body-wide disease. We screen every patient for signs of systemic (body-wide) disease, and we explain everything we find.
-
A careful cornea exam. We look closely at the cornea for side effects of medications. If you take Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine), we do Plaquenil screening.
-
Visual field testing. We have visual field testing to check your side vision.
-
Axial length for myopia management. For children in myopia management, we measure axial length, the length of the eye.
-
Medical follow-up when needed. If you need medical testing, you come back for a separate medical office visit.
Getting your prescription exactly right
Dr. Reimbold spends extra time on the refraction, the "which is better, one or two?" part of the exam. At the end, she shows you one step stronger, which should look blurry, and then one step weaker, which should also look blurry. That confirms your exact prescription. She also makes sure you feel confident in your answers. Many people are afraid of giving the wrong answer, and with her method most patients say they didn't feel worried at all.
Glasses made right here
Every lens is edged right here in our onsite lab, which gives us the most control over your glasses.
The lab also does custom tinting, faceting and lens engraving.
Our opticians all know how to edge lenses and troubleshoot, and they have extensive experience making sure the prescription from your exam is made exactly right.
Every pair gets a triple-check final inspection before it goes home with you.
Our highly trained team
Our staff are highly trained. They know how to read OCT scans, and they often come to the doctor with the likely diagnosis before she even sees you. We give our team as much continuing education as we can, which also makes Reimbold a great place to work.
Glasses and contact lenses
If you need glasses, our opticians take digital measurements with OptiKam, which helps your new lenses feel natural sooner. We get to know what you do and what makes you tick, so we can help you choose just the right style of frames: ones that give you confidence to take on the world. We fit contact lenses too, including daily disposables, toric lenses for astigmatism, multifocals and lenses for hard-to-fit eyes.
Specialty eye care in Alpharetta
Many patients come to us because they need more than a routine prescription. If your exam shows that you need one of these services, we can usually handle it here:
- Keratoconus: early detection with topography every year, plus specialty lenses so you can see clearly.
- Scleral and specialty contact lenses: scleral, hybrid and rigid gas permeable lenses for keratoconus, corneal scars, high astigmatism and hard-to-fit eyes.
- Dry eye: testing of your tears and meibomian glands, then a treatment plan that targets the cause.
- Myopia control: ways to slow a child's nearsightedness. We are an approved CooperVision MiSight 1 day center.
- DreamSculpt Ortho-K: custom overnight lenses that gently reshape the cornea while you sleep. Most wearers don't need glasses or contacts during the day.
- Glaucoma: eye pressure, optic nerve scans and visual field testing, with follow-up for patients who are being treated.
- Pediatric eye exams: exams adapted to each child, from infants to teens.

Eye exam questions patients ask
How often should I have an eye exam?
For most patients we recommend an exam every year, because the retinal photos and corneal topography we take at each visit can catch changes early. Children should have at least one exam between 8 and 14 months, at least one between ages 3 and 5, and then an exam every year once they start school.
What is the $39 fee at my exam?
Every exam includes fundus photography (retinal photos) and corneal topography. Together they carry an annual $39 co-pay that insurance does not pay. Most insurance plans charge $39 for one scan; we include both.
What is OCT angiography?
OCT angiography (OCTA) is an advanced scan of the blood vessels in the back of the eye. Most optometrists don't own one. It can catch early changes from macular degeneration, diabetes and other blood-vessel problems.
Do you screen for Plaquenil?
Yes. If you take Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine), we do Plaquenil screening as part of a careful cornea and eye health exam. If medical testing is needed, you come back for a separate medical office visit.
What if I'm nervous about giving the wrong answer?
Many people are. Dr. Reimbold makes sure you feel confident in your answers, and she checks your prescription one step stronger and one step weaker to confirm it. Most patients say they didn't feel worried at all.
What insurance do you accept?
We accept all vision plans and most major medical plans. We do not accept Medicaid.
Do you see children?
Yes. We see children from infancy through the teen years and adapt each exam to the child. We also offer myopia control for kids whose nearsightedness keeps getting worse.
Are you open on Saturdays?
Yes. We are open Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm, Tuesday to Thursday from 10 am to 6 pm, and Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. We are closed Sunday and Monday.
Can you fit me for contacts if I've been told I'm hard to fit?
Often, yes. We fit scleral, hybrid and rigid gas permeable lenses for keratoconus, corneal scars, high astigmatism and other hard-to-fit eyes.
