Chrome Hearts Eyewear: Sterling Silver, Rock and Roll Roots, and Made in Japan
At a glance: Chrome Hearts began in a Los Angeles garage in 1988 as a leather and silver workshop. Its eyewear, made primarily in Japan, carries the brand's signature sterling silver hardware, with crosses and Gothic details on the temples. Limited distribution makes it one of the most sought-after names in luxury eyewear.
The story
Chrome Hearts was founded in 1988 by Richard Stark, John Bowman and Leonard Kamhout. Stark and Bowman started the business in a Los Angeles garage, making leather jackets they couldn't find anywhere else. Kamhout, a sterling silver jeweler, joined early on, and silver quickly became the heart of the brand: crosses, daggers and Gothic lettering on belts, jewelry and, eventually, eyewear.
The brand is still headquartered in Hollywood. Rather than selling everywhere, Chrome Hearts sells through its own stores and a limited number of luxury retailers, and that scarcity is a big part of its appeal.
What makes Chrome Hearts eyewear different
- Sterling silver hardware. Instead of plain metal, the temples and decorative details are sterling silver, often engraved with the brand's crosses and fleur-de-lis.
- Made in Japan. The eyewear is produced primarily in Japan.
- Bold, substantial frames. Thick acetate fronts and heavy silver detailing give the frames real presence. These are glasses you notice.
- Rock and roll roots. The designs draw on the brand's biker and rock heritage.
Wearing and fitting a heavier frame
Sterling silver and thick acetate add weight, so fit matters. A frame that rests correctly on your nose and is balanced over your ears will feel comfortable all day; one that doesn't will slide. Our opticians adjust the temples and nose fit so the weight is spread evenly, and we choose lenses that keep the overall pair as light as possible. Read why a luxury frame deserves a luxury lens.
Caring for sterling silver
- Silver naturally darkens over time. Many wearers love that aged look in the engraving. If you prefer it bright, ask us before polishing, since harsh polishes can wear down fine engraving.
- Keep it dry and clean. Wipe the frame after wearing, especially after sweat, sunscreen or perfume.
- Store it in its case. Silver and acetate both scratch.
- Let us adjust it. Silver hardware should be adjusted with the right tools, not by hand.

Buy from an authorized source
Because Chrome Hearts is so sought-after, counterfeits are common online. Buying from an authorized retailer, and having the frame fitted by an optician, is the best way to know you are getting the real thing with lenses made correctly for your eyes.
