Mykita: Berlin-Made Eyewear and Its Famous Screwless Hinge

Mykita eyewear at Reimbold Eye Group in Alpharetta

At a glance: Mykita was founded in Berlin in 2003 and hand-assembles its frames there, at a manufactory known as Mykita Haus. The brand is known for thin stainless steel frames with a patented hinge that uses no screws or welded joints, plus a 3D-printed polyamide material called MYLON.

The story

Mykita began in 2003 when a small group of designers in Berlin set out to rethink how glasses are built. Their first collection used stainless steel frames, with a hinge that works without screws or welding. That idea, simple and clever, became the brand's signature.

Today every Mykita frame is still assembled by hand in Berlin. The brand has collaborated with fashion designers and with the camera maker Leica, which teamed up with Mykita on a sunglass collection in 2020.

What makes Mykita different

  • No screws. The hinge design has no screws to loosen, which is one less thing to go wrong.
  • Thin and light stainless steel. Metal frames that are strong yet barely there on your face.
  • MYLON. Introduced in 2010, MYLON is a polyamide material shaped by selective laser sintering, a type of 3D printing. It allows bold shapes that stay remarkably light.

Who Mykita suits

If you want glasses you forget you are wearing, Mykita is worth a try. The light metal frames are a favorite of people who wear glasses all day, and of anyone who has had heavier acetate frames slide down their nose. Thin rims also pair well with high-index lenses, which keep a stronger prescription slim.

A note on fit: because Mykita metal is precise, adjustments should be done by an optician who knows the brand. We fit and adjust every pair in our boutique.
