Statement Eyewear: Anna-Karin Karlsson and Caroline Abram

Caroline Abram eyewear at Reimbold Eye Group in Alpharetta

At a glance: For glasses that feel like jewelry, two designers stand out. Sweden's Anna-Karin Karlsson creates haute-couture frames decorated with hand-set crystals, pearls and gold. Designer Caroline Abram creates bright, feminine frames with a sixties, cat-eye spirit.

Anna-Karin Karlsson: eyewear as couture

Anna-Karin Karlsson studied art, then moved from Sweden to London, where she learned the world of high-end bespoke eyewear at the optical house Meyrowitz. Years later she returned to Sweden to create her own label, blending her eyewear expertise with her art. She hand-draws every frame herself and art-directs all of the brand's imagery.

The results are unmistakable: frames embellished with hand-set crystals and pearls, and materials such as 24-karat gold plating on Japanese titanium. These are pieces for evenings, events and anyone who believes glasses should be the most beautiful thing they wear.

Caroline Abram: color and fun

Caroline Abram trained and worked as an optician before she started designing. In 1998 she began creating eyewear jewelry and accessories, and she is credited with reviving the lorgnette. In 2008 she launched her own eyewear line, inspired by Miami and South Beach, with a vintage sixties feel, cat-eye shapes and bold color. Her collections are meant, in her words, for all women who want to feel beautiful, sensual or simply themselves.

How to wear a statement frame every day

  • Balance the rest of your look. A sparkling or brightly colored frame shines with simple earrings and clean lines.
  • Consider a lighter lens tint. A soft fashion tint can echo the frame color. Our in-house lab can tint lenses to match.
  • Keep a classic backup. Many patients pair a statement frame with an everyday frame.
